Police have detained Aleema Khan, sister of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, under section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance 1960 (MPO). Party sources gave the information on Sunday.

Party sources said Aleema was detained after leaving her home on Upper Mall in Lahore to go to the gym. She was later sent to Kot Lakhpat jail. They said the PTI founder’s sister was detained by Litton Road police station.

Another sister of the PTI founder, Noreen Niazi, told Geo News that Aleema was detained as she left the house. She later learned that Aleema had been taken to Kot Lakhpat jail. Addressing the government, Noreen said: “I do not know why they are so anxious that they are arresting women too.”

She said the PTI chairman, Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, had telephoned her to ask about the situation surrounding Aleema’s arrest. Noreen said: “We are not frightened by steps of this kind. We will always go on fighting for our brother.”

The PTI chief said arresting or detaining Aleema amounted to increasing violence and tension. He strongly condemned Aleema Khan’s arrest. It was also described as the first step towards a worsening of the situation.

Barrister Gohar had earlier argued in favour of talks with the government. He said there had been no progress in the talks because the political atmosphere was “cold”. Speaking to Geo News in Peshawar, the PTI chief said there should be talks, but that the atmosphere at present is cold and no solution has been found.

Barrister Gohar said political problems need political solutions, and that every side will have to give a little to solve the problem. His former governing party has meanwhile announced nationwide protests, including a march in Islamabad on September 27. The programme has been announced in support of the demands for the release of the party’s founder, Imran Khan, and for the establishment of the primacy of the constitution.
