Why we should eat fruit

Since the beginning, fruit has been recognised as an essential part of the human diet — and at a time when unhealthy food has become the cause of so many diseases, its importance has only grown. Each fruit carries different nutrients that benefit the body in different ways: fruit is an excellent natural source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Oranges and amla are rich in vitamin C, which boosts immunity and helps keep skin bright; bananas and grapes carry plenty of potassium, which keeps the heart strong; apples, guavas and berries are high in fibre, aiding digestion and preventing constipation.

Eating fruit lowers the risk of heart disease: the antioxidants in blueberries, strawberries and grapes help control cholesterol, while the lycopene in guava plays an effective role in preventing heart disease. Fruit also helps control weight — generally low in calories and rich in water and fibre, it curbs hunger and reduces the risk of excess calorie intake; watermelon and strawberries, low in calories and high in water, relieve dehydration while helping manage weight. The vitamin C, vitamin A and other antioxidants in fruit raise immunity: oranges, guavas and kiwis in particular are rich in vitamin C, protecting the body from viral and bacterial attack and helping ward off colds and coughs.

Fruit improves digestion — the fibre in apples, guavas, papayas and amla strengthens it and prevents constipation, while enzymes in papaya and amla assist digestion and ease stomach trouble. It also protects the skin: the vitamins A and C in watermelon, oranges and papaya keep skin bright and smooth, and the antioxidants in berries help resist wrinkles. Water-rich fruits such as watermelon, cucumber and palm relieve dehydration and keep the body hydrated on hot days. Overall, fruit supplies the nutrients the body needs for wellbeing and long-term health — adding it to the daily diet meets nutritional needs and protects against a range of diseases.
