The first budget of the government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will be presented at 3pm on Thursday (11 June), with Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury delivering it in parliament. Once passed, it will be the country’s 55th budget — and the first of the current government’s term and of the finance minister.

The budget may bring relief in the kitchen: prices could fall on a range of household goods, including blenders, juicers, mixers, grinders, electric kettles, irons, rice cookers, multi-cookers and pressure cookers, along with similar items such as electric cookers, induction cookers, infrared cookers, water purifiers and water heaters/geysers and other electronics.

Computer users may also get good news, with prices possibly falling on computers, printers and monitors. Prices may also drop on 15 products needed by people with special needs, and on medical items including kidney-dialysis filters. Gold ornaments could become cheaper too: the budget is expected to cut the source tax on jewellery sales from 5 percent to 0.5 percent.
