CHANGSHA, China — An explosion at a fireworks factory in China’s Hunan province has killed at least 21 people and injured 61 others, the country’s state media said Tuesday.
State news agency Xinhua said the blast struck Monday afternoon in the city of Changsha. About 500 rescue workers were deployed at the scene, and people were evacuated from high-risk areas.
Two black-powder storage warehouses at the factory created an additional hazard, the report said. Three robots were also being used to assist the rescue operation. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the blast, and regulatory measures have been taken against those responsible at the company, though officials did not specify what those measures were.
Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered a swift investigation after the incident. He also called for strengthened risk identification and control in key industrial sectors.
