North Korea will never give up its nuclear weapons and will instead keep increasing its nuclear power, Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of the country’s supreme leader Kim Jong Un, has bluntly declared. She made the announcement in a statement on Monday (8 June), just before Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to North Korea. On the eve of the two countries’ historic summit, Kim Yo Jong made clear that North Korea would tolerate no threat, and described the US effort to denuclearise Pyongyang as an “outdated dream.” The information came via North Korea’s state news agency KCNA.

Kim Yo Jong, who holds two important posts in Kim Jong Un’s government, rejected the US claim as completely false. The United States had earlier claimed that, at a summit between Trump and Xi Jinping last May, Beijing and Washington had agreed on denuclearising North Korea. On this, Kim Yo Jong said the US claim was untrue and that she had the most accurate information on the matter. She reiterated that, in line with the head of state’s declaration, the policy of continually strengthening self-defensive nuclear-war capability is a final and irreversible decision to be implemented without any conditions. Some US officials, she said, have still not woken from their unrealistic, outdated dream.

Kim Yo Jong’s warning came at a time when North Korea recently unveiled a new nuclear-material production facility. During an inspection there, Kim Jong Un had ordered the country’s nuclear arsenal to be increased “exponentially.” South Korea’s news agency Yonhap reported that Kim Jong Un inspected a major munitions factory and ordered the country’s missile-production capacity to be increased two-and-a-half times over the next five years.
