Ahead of the final in New York, many are making their own predictions, and Toni Kroos has too. On his brother’s podcast, the former Germany midfielder said his bet is on Spain, and explained his reasoning: he does not rate the current Argentina side above Germany — even though Germany went out on penalties to Paraguay at the start of this tournament’s knockout stage.
Kroos sees Lionel Messi’s role behind Argentina reaching the final through various anxious twists. The former Real Madrid midfielder said he had thought the Qatar World Cup would be Messi’s last; like many, he was proved wrong, with Messi already scoring 8 goals to lead Argentina from the front this tournament, treating 39 as just a number. But for all his praise of Messi, Kroos sees little chance for Argentina in the final. “If Spain go 1-0 up, forget it, they’ll score three or four more. Argentina won’t find a solution,” Kroos said. “Argentina are not a better team than Germany, but their mentality is unbelievable.” He added: “Messi has brought them to the final. My sense is that Messi’s intelligence keeps growing. I thought the 2022 World Cup would be his last.” Argentina and Spain meet in the North America World Cup final in New York at 1am Bangladesh time on 20 July.
