The youth wing of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Sreepur municipal unit held a tree-planting program in Gazipur’s Sreepur upazila, aimed at protecting the environment, expanding green cover and fostering a love of trees among students.
On Monday morning, saplings of various fruit-bearing trees were planted at the program, held on the grounds of the No. 84 Kewa Purbakhanda Government Primary School in the upazila. Local leaders, teachers, students and guardians took part in the event. The chief guest was Abul Kalam Azad, the secretary of the Sreepur upazila unit of Jamaat-e-Islami and its candidate for upazila vice chairman. The special guest was Dr. Md. Harun Ar Rashid, Jamaat-e-Islami’s nominated candidate for mayor of Sreepur municipality. Also present were Maulana Abul Hossain, secretary of the Sreepur municipal Jamaat-e-Islami unit; Mashudul Hasan, the unit’s office and treasury secretary; school headmaster Mahbubur Rahman; and local dignitaries, teachers and students.
At a discussion meeting moderated by Aktaruzzaman Molla, secretary of the youth wing of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Sreepur municipal unit, speakers said tree planting is of immense importance in maintaining environmental balance and countering the adverse effects of climate change. They said everyone must plant more trees from wherever they stand to build a green and livable world.
Speakers also said it was not enough simply to plant trees; the trees planted must be properly cared for. They said school-based programs of this kind can play an important role, especially in raising environmental awareness among students and increasing their interest in tree planting.
At the event, the guests asked after the students’ studies and urged them to study attentively and grow into capable citizens for the welfare of the country and the nation. They also stressed the building of ethical values, discipline and a sense of social responsibility.
After the discussion meeting, saplings of fruit-bearing trees were planted at various spots on the school grounds. The organizers expressed their resolve to continue such public-welfare programs in education, social development and environmental protection in the future as well.
Local residents welcomed the initiative, saying school-based tree-planting programs would help build an environmentally friendly mindset among students and play a positive role in expanding green cover in the area.
