DHAKA — Opposition party chief whip Nahid Islam has demanded the removal and arrest of President Mohammed Sahabuddin Chuppu. “This president has no moral right to live in Bangabhaban or to speak in parliament,” he said.
Nahid made the remarks Thursday during discussion of the motion of thanks on the president’s address at the parliamentary session. Deputy Speaker Barrister Kaisar Kamal presided over the session.
“I did not listen to or read the president’s speech. We rejected that speech and the decision to allow him to make it,” Nahid Islam said. “We clearly said that this president needs to be removed. He needs to be arrested. This president has no right to remain in Bangabhaban or come here to speak.”
“President Sahabuddin Chuppu — I am putting some of his misdeeds before this house,” he said. “He was a commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission. He was appointed to that post on three assignments. Number one was to ensure punishment for corruption charges against Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman. Number two was to give Awami League a clean chit from the Padma Bridge corruption charges. Number three was to dismiss the corruption cases filed during the Fakhruddin-Moeenuddin government against Sheikh Hasina and other Awami League leaders. The BNP government still recognizes such a person as president.”
Nahid said the three-member judicial inquiry commission on minority torture in 2001, led by Sahabuddin Chuppu, had been formed on the orders of Sheikh Hasina’s “kangaroo court” in 2009. According to its report, BNP’s 26,000 leaders and activists were held responsible for the killing of thousands of Hindus after the party came to power in 2001. The Awami League used this report at home and abroad to entrench itself in power. The president has driven 20 million depositors of Islami Bank into ruin. We know all about his role during the July massacre and his ties to fascism. To our misfortune, this corrupt, worthless, liar and accomplice in mass killing is still the president of Bangladesh.
Nahid Islam said President Sahabuddin Chuppu issued one-sided rulings during his tenure as Anti-Corruption Commission commissioner. He is the architect of the Islami Bank looting and an accomplice in the July massacre. We reject this president.
“After the July mass uprising, students demanded the president’s removal,” he said. “But BNP at the time stood by him citing constitutional continuity. Now there is an elected government, so why is he not being replaced?”
