Julián Álvarez has made his wish to join Barcelona clearer still. Amid the continuing tension with Atlético Madrid, the Argentine forward is preparing to state his position publicly in order to take the process of leaving the club forward. The Spanish outlet Sport reported that he may take an important decision on his future at the start of August.
According to the report, Álvarez’s contention is that the Atlético authorities had assured him they would discuss the matter if a suitable offer came from a big club. But even after Barcelona made an offer of 100 million euros, the Madrid club did not sit down to discuss it. Álvarez is unhappy with the club’s stance over this.
The forward, who is under contract with Atlético until 2031, has a buy-out clause of 500 million euros. With the club not shifting from its position, the transfer process is at an impasse for the time being. Sport contends that Álvarez is now considering speaking publicly himself in order to change the situation.
Álvarez had hinted at his future during the World Cup. He said: “I have spoken to club officials. I think a transfer at this moment would be good for everyone, and I want to fulfil my dream.”
According to the report, he is not interested in going to any other club for now. There was talk of interest from Arsenal, but it did not progress. Barcelona’s coaching staff, on the other hand, regard Álvarez as an ideal addition to the attack. But Barça will take a fresh step only when Álvarez himself is able to thaw the ice at Atlético.
Atlético’s pre-season training under Diego Simeone is due to begin on 10 August. Various reports say Álvarez may make his final position on his future clear before then.
