Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has announced that the price of bidis and the tax rates applicable to them will remain unchanged in the budget for fiscal 2026-27. He gave the information during the question hour in parliament on Tuesday (9 June).
The minister made the announcement in reply to a question from Rasheda Begum Hira, a member from a reserved women’s seat, who had proposed raising the specific tax on bidis, revisiting the VAT and health development surcharge rates, and further increasing the retail price. In reply, the finance minister made clear that, considering the overall situation, the government has decided not to change the existing price and tax structure for bidis in the coming budget — so current prices and rates will carry into the next fiscal year as they did last year.
