PSG 1–1 Arsenal (PSG won 4–3 on penalties)

Many had perhaps forgotten that a Champions League final could go beyond 90 minutes. Back in 2016 in Milan, the Real Madrid–Atletico Madrid final went past the extra half-hour and was settled on penalties.

A decade later, the final again went past 90 minutes — and to a shootout. In this nerve test between PSG and Arsenal at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, the French club won in the end, beating Arsenal 4–3 on penalties to claim a second straight Champions League title.

In the shootout, PSG’s Lucas Beraldo found the net with the last shot while Arsenal’s Gabriel Magalhães fired over the bar — making the Paris club the second side after Real Madrid to win the Champions League back-to-back.

PSG had to sweat to keep the trophy. Arsenal began brightly. In the sixth minute, Marquinhos’s clearance struck Leandro Trossard and fell to Kai Havertz, and the German forward put his side ahead. PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov had no chance to stop the bullet of a shot over his head.

PSG had started with the same 10 players who began last year’s final, the only change being Safonov. Perhaps because they had the experience of winning on this stage a year earlier, PSG did not freeze after conceding early; rather, with Arsenal sitting deeper to defend, Ousmane Dembélé, Fabián Ruiz and Désiré Doué sharpened the attack, though their long-range shots stayed off target. Before half-time, Havertz almost gave Arsenal a second, but Marquinhos held firm.

From the start of the second half, Arsenal looked to waste time. Cristian Mosquera was booked for time-wasting, and in the 65th minute the Spanish right-back gave PSG their way back. When Mosquera fouled Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the box, PSG won a penalty, and Dembélé made no mistake to level the score (1–1).

After that, PSG’s control only grew. A Kvaratskhelia shot hit the post and Bradley Barcola wasted two simple chances, but with neither side scoring, the match went to extra time. In that half-hour Arsenal also created chances, but Jurriën Timber and Viktor Gyökeres could not take them, and the match went to penalties.

Right after Arsenal’s Eberechi Eze missed their second shot, David Raya saved PSG’s Nuno Mendes effort, leaving the shootout level after four kicks each. But Arsenal could not stay level with their final shot — when Brazilian centre-back Magalhães sent it over the bar, the celebrations began in the PSG camp. Until now, only Real Madrid had won back-to-back Champions League titles; having waited for a single title until 2025, PSG have now won consecutive trophies to sit alongside Real.
