A phone conversation was played at the tribunal while arguments were presented against seven accused, including Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader, in a crimes-against-humanity case over the July mass uprising. In it, Quader asked Youth League president Sheikh Fazle Shams Porosh: “Uncle, why do you keep staying outside?”
The conversation, presented at International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Tuesday (August 11), continued with Porosh saying: “No, I am here. Even though I am outside, I am with you every hour.”
When Quader hesitated about Porosh being away, Porosh said: “You can ask around. I left long ago, on the 25th, but I have been with you every day since.”
Quader then urged him to ensure the largest possible presence at the next day’s rally. Porosh replied that preparations were under way. Quader said that was why he had called.
The other accused are banned Awami League joint general secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim; former state minister for information Mohammad Ali Arafat; Youth League president Sheikh Fazle Shams Porosh and general secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil; and banned terrorist organisation Chhatra League president Saddam Hossain and general secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Inan.
