The Coast Guard rescued the crew alive and provided the necessary medical aid after a lighter vessel sank in the Karnaphuli channel in Chattogram.

Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan gave the account on Tuesday (30 June) morning.

He said that at 3 a.m. on Tuesday, near Ghat No. 18 of the Karnaphuli river under Patenga police station, the lighter vessel MV Bay Harbour-2, while heading to Dhaka, collided head-on with another moving lighter vessel, MV Samuda-6. The vessel was badly damaged; its hull cracked, water poured in and it listed to one side. After travelling a short distance further, it became almost completely submerged between outer-anchorage buoys No. 2 and 3.

As soon as word of the accident came in, the BCG Outpost Patenga, under the Coast Guard East Zone, mounted a search-and-rescue operation, he said. Of the 12 crew aboard the sunken vessel, eight were pulled out alive on the spot by the Coast Guard rescue team. The other four missing crew were swept toward Parki Char by the strong current and managed to reach the shore safely.

The rescued crew were given first aid and other assistance, and the process of handing them over to the relevant vessel authority is under way, he said, adding that the Coast Guard would continue such operations in future.
