Gazi Maulana Ataur Rahman has become the new secretary general of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (IAB). The outgoing secretary general, Principal Yunus Ahmad, has been made a presidium member of the party.
Gazi Ataur was given the secretary general’s post at a special session of the IAB’s Majlis-e-Shura at the Fars Hotel and Resort in Bijoynagar in the capital on Saturday (27 June). At the session, the previous committee was dissolved before the end of its term and some reshuffling was made in the top posts.
IAB central media coordinator KM Shariatullah confirmed the matter to the media.
He said the party’s current central committee was due to end its term next December. But a post-parliamentary-election assessment had revealed several organisational weaknesses, including contesting the election alone, candidate selection and inactivity among grassroots workers. In this context, some changes had been made in the party’s leadership ahead of the local-government elections.
Gazi Ataur had previously served as central joint secretary general and spokesman of Islami Andolan Bangladesh. Principal Yunus had served continuously as secretary general since 2008.
