Argentina take the field against Algeria on Wednesday aiming to defend their FIFA World Cup title. Ahead of the match, there is relief for the squad — Nicolás Tagliafico and Leandro Paredes have shaken off injury and returned to training.

Under coach Lionel Scaloni, Argentina trained on Monday at the Compass Minerals National Performance Center in Kansas. There, Paredes also took part in a practice match to test his fitness, giving a positive sign of his full recovery.

He sustained a hamstring injury last month while playing for Boca Juniors and had been in rehabilitation since.

Nicolás Tagliafico, meanwhile, had been training separately since picking up an injury in a friendly against Honduras. The Argentine Football Association (AFA) said he is now improving through gym and physio sessions and that his progress is satisfactory.

A final decision on Tagliafico’s fitness will be taken after a further medical examination. Coach Scaloni will then decide whether to keep him in the squad.

An injury update on forward Julián Álvarez is also expected today. He has already recovered from an ankle injury and returned to full training.

Argentina take the field against Algeria at 7 a.m. Bangladesh time on Wednesday. Under FIFA rules, an injured player can be replaced in the squad up to 24 hours before the match.
