Two elderly men in Keshabpur, Jashore, have taken their own lives, unable to bear the illness and physical pain of old age, police and hospital sources say. It happened on Friday night in separate villages of the upazila. One died on Saturday morning while being treated in hospital; the other was declared dead by a doctor when he was taken there.
They are Panchanan Das, 70, son of the late Hazari Lal Das of Panchpota village, and Ruhul Quddus, 60, son of Sabed Ali Gazi of Koriakhali village.
Hospital and police sources said Panchanan Das, unable to bear a pain in his stomach, swallowed a poisonous substance at home on Friday night. When his family realised, they admitted him that night to Keshabpur government hospital, where he died on Saturday morning.
Ruhul Quddus took his own life at his home in Koriakhali village at about 10:30pm on Friday. Members of his family took him to Keshabpur government hospital on Saturday morning, where the duty doctor declared him dead.
Dr Rehenewaz, Keshabpur’s upazila health and family planning officer, said the two men had taken their own lives because they could not bear the suffering of their illnesses.
Keshabpur police station officer-in-charge Hafizur Rahman said police visited the scenes on being informed and prepared inquest reports for both. As the families made no complaint, permission was given for the burial and cremation of the bodies.
