A two-and-a-half-year-old boy named Safuan has drowned in the Louhajang river in Mirzapur, Tangail. It happened at about 10:30am on Thursday (15 October) in the river beside the Kanthalia area of the upazila’s municipal headquarters.
Safuan was the son of Abdul Mannan Mia of Kanthalia village.
According to relatives and local sources, the child went to the bank of the Louhajang river in the morning without anyone at home noticing, and at one point fell into deep water and went under. Several women on the opposite bank saw it and screamed, but there was nobody nearby at the time to save him. The women saw the child go under the water, waving his hands. Local people then called the fire service.
A team from Tangail Fire Service and Civil Defence quickly reached the spot. A three-member diving team began searching the river at 11am and recovered the child’s body from the middle of the river at about 3:40pm.
Md Ismail Hossain, team leader of Tangail Fire Service and Civil Defence, said: “As soon as we were informed, a seven-member team, three divers among them, reached the spot and began the rescue operation. After the child’s body was recovered in the afternoon it was handed over to his family.”
