A Tangail court has sentenced a stepmother named Sabrina Nahar Sinthi to life imprisonment with hard labour for killing her young stepson.
Tangail Senior Sessions Judge Md Hafizur Rahman handed down the sentence on Wednesday (November 4) afternoon.
The convict, Sinthi, 24, is the daughter of Md Alauddin of Narayanpur village in Pangsha upazila of Rajbari district.
According to Tangail sessions court Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Md Shafiqul Islam Ripon, the boy’s father married his first wife in 2009, and the couple had a son. They later divorced over differences.
In 2018 the father married Sinthi after a relationship. He lived with her, his second wife, in a rented flat in Biswas Betka in Tangail town, while the boy lived with his grandfather.
On the afternoon of January 17, 2020, the father brought his son to the rented flat. On the evening of the next day, January 18, while the father was out, Sinthi in a planned manner tied the boy’s hands, feet, nose and mouth with a scarf, smothered him and then killed him by pushing his head into a bucket of water.
On January 19 the boy’s grandfather filed a case against unnamed people with Tangail Sadar police station. Police then arrested Sinthi as a suspect. She later confessed to killing the boy in a statement before a magistrate under section 164.
Police submitted the charge sheet to the court on June 14, 2020. At the end of the trial the court sentenced Sinthi to life imprisonment with hard labour and a fine of Tk 50,000, in default of which she will serve another year of simple imprisonment.
The judge read out the verdict in the presence of the accused, who was then taken to Tangail jail. Advocate Shefali Akter represented the defence.
