The vice-chancellor of Rajshahi Medical University, Professor Dr Md Jawadul Haque, and section officer Nazmul Hossain were allegedly forced to sign resignation letters. A group of people calling themselves “students and the general public” entered the university campus on Tuesday morning and carried this out, according to the allegation.

According to witnesses and those affected, the attackers entered the vice-chancellor’s office by force with a procession at about 11am on Tuesday. Calling them “collaborators” of the Awami League and alleging that the university’s work had been given to contractors from Dhaka, they physically assaulted the vice-chancellor and the section officer. They then forcibly took their signatures on resignation letters written in advance. After taking the signatures they put the two men out of the room and padlocked the main gate.

During the incident the attackers removed and took away the CPU of a computer and the CCTV footage equipment from the vice-chancellor’s room. Electricity and internet connections to the whole campus were also cut.

Describing the incident, Nazmul Hossain, a section officer and the vice-chancellor’s private secretary, said the vice-chancellor had been in an online meeting of the ministry with senior officials since 10am. “At about 11am a group of people entered the room by force with a procession, began abusing the vice-chancellor and took his signature on a resignation letter prepared in advance. Then I too was forced to sign a resignation letter. When I refused, they beat me,” he said.

Abul Kalam Azad, officer-in-charge of Rajpara Police Station of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, said: “I got word by phone that a group of people had confined the vice-chancellor of Rajshahi Medical University. I went and found the vice-chancellor’s room locked. I did not find any organised group there. Nobody has filed a written complaint yet. We will take action if we receive one.”
