Pakistan’s politics revolves around the jailed former prime minister Imran Khan, the veteran journalist Hamid Mir has said.

In a column he wrote that terrorism cannot be rooted out by running operations against a political party in the name of governor’s rule. Shehbaz Sharif’s government has become hostage to “fear of Imran Khan”, he wrote, and has pushed Pakistan towards a kind of civilian dictatorship.

In the recent column on the country’s political situation, he noted that the federal government has failed to carry out a clear Supreme Court order to move Imran Khan to Shifa Hospital. In response, Sohail Afridi, the former chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, announced a march.

The government blamed Sohail Afridi for the failure of talks and imposed governor’s rule and a state of emergency in the province, removing an elected government from power.

Analysing the situation, Hamid Mir wrote that Imran Khan, standing in a different position from the past, has refused to reach any kind of compromise or to go abroad.

As a result the government is unwilling to ease his release or his transfer to hospital. Had the Supreme Court’s order been carried out, he wrote, the political crisis in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, governor’s rule and the long march would not have arisen.

He said actions taken against political opponents in the name of counter-terrorism operations are pushing the country towards civilian dictatorship, and that peace cannot be established in the province by such steps.

He called on the government to give up the path of political vengeance and unite all political forces, so that success abroad and stability at home can be achieved and lessons learned from the region’s history.
