The upazila administration and the Department of Fisheries in Kawkhali, Pirojpur, have carried out a special drive on the Sandhya river as part of the Hilsa Conservation Campaign 2026, during the main breeding season of mother hilsa. About 8,000 metres of illegal nets were seized at several points on the river and burned.

The drive was carried out around midday on Sunday (18 October) at the Chirapara estuary, the launch ghat area and other points on the Sandhya river in the upazila.

The seized nets included 7,000 metres of illegal thread net and 1,000 metres of China duari trap net. They were burned in front of local people.

The drive, run jointly by the Kawkhali upazila administration and the upazila fisheries office with the help of the river police, was led by upazila fisheries officer Md Hafizur Rahman.

“Mother hilsa are our national resource,” Hafizur Rahman said. “If they can spawn undisturbed in the breeding season, hilsa production will rise in future. But some dishonest and careless people are defying the government ban and trying to catch hilsa by setting illegal nets in the river. We are taking a tough stand against them. In today’s drive about 8,000 metres of illegal net was seized and burned. Regular and special drives will continue throughout the breeding season to protect mother hilsa.”

Kawkhali upazila nirbahi officer Rehana Akter said: “We will keep a zero-tolerance policy to protect hilsa, a national resource, and ensure mother hilsa can breed undisturbed. Monitoring and drives are continuing day and night so that no one can set nets in the river in defiance of the ban.”
