Police have recovered the hanging body of a tailoring businessman, Swapan Debnath, 46, in Kawkhali, Pirojpur.
His body was recovered from a castor tree near the central cremation ground in the upazila town at around 1:30pm on Tuesday, 20 October.
Swapan owned Shruti Tailors in the Kapuriapatti area of the upazila town. He had lived in a rented home in Kawkhali for a long time. His home village is Amua in Kathalia upazila of Jhalakathi district.
According to local sources, residents saw Swapan’s body with a rope around the neck, tied to a tree near the central cremation ground on Tuesday afternoon, and informed Kawkhali police. Police went to the scene, recovered the body and first took it to the upazila health complex. After legal formalities there, the body was taken to Kawkhali police station.
Some local sources say Swapan had been in a dispute with his wife over various family matters. He reportedly spent more time playing games on his mobile phone than working in his shop, which often led to arguments between them. Local sources also say his wife had taken the phone away before the incident. It could not immediately be confirmed whether any of this was directly connected to his death.
“Police recovered the body from the scene after being informed. The body is being sent to the morgue for a post-mortem. The real cause of death will be known when we get the post-mortem report. Legal action is under way at the police station,” said Md Anwar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kawkhali police station.
