A 16-year-old school student was seriously injured in Kawkhali, Pirojpur, when he lost control of a motorcycle he was riding at high speed and crashed into an electric pole.
The accident happened at around 10am on Tuesday, October 27, at Dhopabari Mor on the Kawkhali-Swarupkathi road near the central ashram, on the way from Kawkhali to Amrajuri ferry ghat.
The injured boy is a tenth-grade student at a local school in the upazila.
Local people and witnesses said he was riding towards Amrajuri ferry ghat in the morning when, on reaching Dhopabari Mor, he suddenly lost control and slammed into an electric pole by the road. He suffered severe injuries to his head and body. Passers-by rescued him and rushed him to Kawkhali Upazila Health Complex.
Dr Nahid Hasan, resident medical officer of the health complex, said the boy had suffered a severe head injury. As his condition was critical, he was referred to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal for better treatment after first aid.
Angry local residents and passers-by said teenagers and young men now ride motorcycles at reckless speed without following any rules, causing a steady rise in road accidents. They called on the administration to step in urgently to stop underage riding and enforce traffic laws strictly.
