Argentina captain Lionel Messi said he intends to keep playing football for as long as he is physically able to contribute to his team, but declined to say whether he would be at the 2030 World Cup.

“I will play a little longer. As long as I can do something for the team, feel physically well and help my teammates, I will keep playing,” Messi said. Asked directly about 2030, the 39-year-old said: “To be honest, I’m not thinking about that now. 2030 is still very far away. I’m focused on the present and going day by day.”

Argentina have had a strong start to the 2026 World Cup. They topped Group J after winning both their first two matches — Messi scored a hat-trick in a 3-0 win over Algeria in their opener and added two goals in a 2-0 win over Austria. They face Jordan in their final group match, a game they can use to further prepare for the knockout rounds.
