The government has decided to create a new police station, ‘Halda’, by splitting Hathazari in Chattogram, along with three new upazilas: ‘Fatikchhari Uttar’, combining six unions of Fatikchhari; ‘Bangra’, by splitting Muradnagar; and ‘Adarshanagar’, combining eight unions of Pagla police station in Gaffargaon.

The decisions are to be taken at the 121st meeting of the National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganisation (NICAR) at 11 a.m. on Wednesday (1 July).

The meeting is due to be held in Room 1000 of the Cabinet Division, chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

The information was given in a meeting notice issued last Sunday by the NICAR-1 branch of the Cabinet Division.

The notice said several important proposals would be presented and discussed at the meeting, including the reorganisation of the country’s administrative structure, the creation of new police stations and upazilas, and the redrawing of district boundaries.

Six key proposals are on the agenda. The Home Ministry will move the proposal to establish ‘Halda’ police station by splitting Hathazari thana in Chattogram.

The Local Government Division will table the proposal to form a new ‘Fatikchhari Uttar’ upazila from six unions of Fatikchhari upazila in Chattogram.

The meeting will also discuss a proposal to form a new ‘Bangra’ upazila by splitting Muradnagar upazila in Cumilla.

Also on the agenda is the reorganisation of the administrative boundaries of Dhaka, Narayanganj and Gazipur districts by bringing the Narayanganj and Gazipur portions of the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) Purbachal New Town project into Dhaka district. The Housing and Public Works Ministry will table that proposal.

A proposal to form a new ‘Adarshanagar’ upazila from eight unions under Pagla thana in Gaffargaon upazila of Mymensingh will also be considered.

An administrative reorganisation proposal relating to the Roads and Highways Department (RHD), under the Road Transport and Highways Division, is also due to be discussed.

The Cabinet Division said the ministers concerned and committee members had been asked to attend on time. Working papers were sent to members in advance, with instructions to return them after the meeting.

The NICAR meeting is being seen as important for administrative reorganisation, expanding the local government system and making public services more effective and accessible. Proposals approved at the meeting will later be put into effect through a government gazette notification.
