Measles kills 5 more in Bangladesh, 1,115 new cases reported

DHAKA — The measles situation in Bangladesh continues to deteriorate, with three more deaths from the disease in the past 24 hours, the Directorate General of Health Services said Friday. Two additional deaths were reported with measles-like symptoms.

The information was released in a news bulletin from the Directorate General of Health Services’ control room on Friday.

According to the bulletin, 1,115 new suspected measles cases were detected across the country in the past day. Of those, the presence of the virus was confirmed in 127 people through laboratory testing.

Health Directorate statistics show that from March 15 to April 17, the number of confirmed measles cases in the country stood at 3,192. Over the same period, 21,467 suspected cases were recorded. Of those, 11,243 patients have recovered and been discharged from hospital.

In the past month, a total of 37 people have died from confirmed measles, while 174 have died with measles symptoms. Geographic analysis shows the highest infection rate so far is in Dhaka division. In that division, measles has been confirmed in 1,965 of the 9,274 suspected patients.

The Health Directorate said round-the-clock monitoring is underway to manage the situation. The government is working through an integrated control center to collect and analyze data regularly and to ensure treatment for those infected, it said. The public has also been urged to remain alert to prevent infection and to consult a doctor immediately if symptoms appear.
