Former municipal commissioner Bachir arrested at airport in murder case

Airport police have arrested Bachir Uddin, 40, a former municipal commissioner of Debidwar in Cumilla and an accused in a murder case from the anti-discrimination student movement.

He was arrested at Dhaka international airport early on Sunday (28 June) as he returned home from the United Arab Emirates.

Debidwar police station officer-in-charge Md Moniruzzaman confirmed the arrest at midday.

Bachir Uddin was a ward-7 commissioner of Debidwar municipality and a Swechchhasebak League leader. He is the son of Md Abul Hossain Mollah of Chapanagar village in the municipality.

Police said Bachir Uddin was arrested at the airport after returning home, having long been a fugitive abroad. He is a named accused in several murder cases filed during the anti-discrimination student movement.

Debidwar police station officer-in-charge Md Moniruzzaman said Bachir Uddin was an accused in the Rubel murder case, the Sabbir murder case and the Abubakar attempted-murder case. Airport police had informed them after arresting him, and station police had been sent to bring him. There are three cases against him, he said.
