An attempt to smuggle yaba in a luxury private car bearing “Home Ministry” and “Mirpur DOHS” stickers has been foiled.
The Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) detained one young man and two young women, along with 6,000 yaba pills, in a raid on the car in Ramu, Cox’s Bazar.
The incident took place on Wednesday morning in the rubber-garden area of Ramu, on the Cox’s Bazar-Chattogram highway.
Those detained are Sabbir Hossain, 36, son of Abdul Gofur of Shalukia in Chouddagram upazila of Cumilla; Sima Islam, daughter of the late Shahidul Islam Sabuj of West Nau in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj; and Urmi Akter Usha, 19, of Dakkhin Bishil in the Darussalam area of Dhaka.
Somen Mondal, deputy director of the DNC’s Cox’s Bazar district office, said a special team had taken position in the Ramu rubber-garden area on secret information. A suspicious white Toyota private car was signalled to stop, and stickers of the “Home Ministry” and “Mirpur DOHS” were seen on its windshield. During initial questioning, the occupants claimed to know senior Home Ministry officials and tried to use influence, DNC officials said, but on searching the car they recovered 6,000 yaba pills from three packets wrapped in scotch tape and tissue paper and hidden inside the dashboard.
The private car used to transport the drugs, four smartphones and various car documents were seized.
The DNC said an initial investigation had found no institutional link between the car or the stickers and the Home Ministry, and that the stickers were believed to have been used to evade law enforcement.
A case has been filed against the three under the relevant sections of the Narcotics Control Act at Ramu Police Station, and the process of handing them over to court is under way, the DNC said.
