While digging a grave to bury a woman in Monoharganj, Cumilla, local people have claimed they found the body of her husband, Ramzan Ali, still intact about 24 years after he was buried. After word of the incident spread, it created intense curiosity and excitement in the area, and people from various nearby places gathered at the graveyard to see it.

The incident happened on Friday (31 July) in Ulupara village of North Haula union in the upazila.

According to local sources, Ramzan Ali’s wife died on Friday. While digging her grave beside her husband’s, the gravediggers claimed they saw Ramzan Ali’s body, along with its shroud, in an intact state. When word got out, crowds of curious people gathered at the graveyard.

According to the gravediggers, the body, with its shroud, was in almost its original condition. Many of those present expressed astonishment at the sight.

Local residents said Ramzan Ali died about 24 years ago. In his lifetime he was known in the area as a devout, honest and upright man who regularly performed the five daily prayers and earned a living trading rice and flour at local markets.

Residents said the late Ramzan Ali was a shining example of the power of faith and that such a sign from God was instructive for them.

Hafez Maulana Mahfuzur Rahman, imam of the Ulupara Jame Mosque, said he went to the spot on hearing the news and saw the shroud-wrapped body inside the grave. He then directed that the body be left as it was and that the wife be buried beside it.

No relevant government authority or expert could immediately be reached to explain why the body had remained intact for so long.
