The BNP has announced a program to observe a day of mourning across the country, including Dhaka, on Monday over the death of its standing committee member Jamir Uddin Sarkar.

The party’s senior joint secretary general, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, announced the program at a news conference at the party’s central office in Nayapaltan on Sunday afternoon.

He said: “On the death of the late Barrister Jamir Uddin Sarkar, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party is announcing a one-day program. Tomorrow, Monday, a day of mourning will be observed across the country.”

The senior joint secretary general said black flags would be hoisted at party offices across the country, including Dhaka, and that leaders and workers would each wear black badges.

Rizvi said: “Barrister Jamir Uddin Sarkar is no longer among us. He has gone far away from us.” He said the veteran leader’s unique role in every movement for the nation’s rights, from the language movement of his student days to the struggle for independence and the democratic movements, would never fade in the nation’s memory. “He was a living history of contemporary politics. His glorious contribution will be written in golden letters. In his death the country has lost an experienced parliamentarian, and lost a guardian,” he said.

Jamir Uddin Sarkar, a member of the BNP standing committee, died at 4:19 a.m. on Sunday while under treatment at the Specialized Hospital in Shyamoli. Rizvi said Barrister Jamir Uddin Sarkar’s first funeral prayer would be held after Zuhr at the Taqwa Mosque in Dhanmondi and later at the south plaza of the Parliament building at 5 p.m., and he prayed for the salvation of the departed leader’s soul.

At the news conference, the BNP leader called on party leaders and workers to stand by people affected by the disaster. “Chattogram and vast areas of the country have gone under water. Our prime minister and party chairman have directed party leaders and workers at all levels to stand by the flood-affected people,” he said.
