The second prosecution witness in the murder trial of Saiful Islam Alif — the well-known Chattogram advocate — broke down in tears while giving evidence, repeatedly weeping as he described the incident to the court. At the same hearing, the court rejected a bail petition filed by one of the accused, Chinmoy Krishna Das.
The testimony was recorded on Monday in the court of Judge Fazle Khoda Mohammad Nazir of the Chattogram Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal. Charge-sheeted accused Chinmoy Krishna Das joined the proceedings virtually, while the other accused were brought to court from jail under tight security.
The prosecution lawyer and assistant public prosecutor, Md Raihanul Wajed Chowdhury, said that witness Advocate Shahidul Alam Rahat broke down in tears several times while describing the incident. His weeping created an emotional atmosphere in the courtroom, and many of the lawyers present were also visibly moved.
After the testimony, the defence began cross-examining the witness. As the cross-examination could not be completed, Chinmoy Krishna Das’s lawyer sought more time. The court granted the request and set 20 August as the next date for cross-examination. At the same hearing, the court also rejected the bail petition filed on behalf of Chinmoy Krishna Das.
Testimony is currently under way at the Speedy Trial Tribunal in the widely discussed case over the murder of Advocate Saiful Islam Alif in Chattogram.
