Police detained Sohani Shifa, president of the ‘Save Dhaka’ organization, while she was running a symbolic rice stall outside the Secretariat as a protest. She was released on bond after approximately two hours.
A video of her detention on Sunday afternoon spread on social media.
Shifa had been campaigning for several days to free roads and footpaths near various metro rail stations from hawker encroachment. As part of the campaign, she set up a temporary rice stall outside the Secretariat on Sunday, offering rice, lentils, and mashed potato for Tk 10.
Shortly after she began selling around noon, Shahbag police detained her along with her food cart and took her to the station.
Ramna division deputy commissioner Sheikh Zahidul Islam told Samakal: “Cooked food was being sold on the footpath in an unhygienic environment. She was removed from there and later released on bond.”
