DHAKA — Bangladesh will begin coordinated nationwide raids against online gambling and drugs after April 30, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed told parliament on Monday.
Ahmed made the announcement in response to a notice during a session of the National Parliament on the afternoon of April 27.
The home minister said that in keeping with election commitments, coordinated raids against online gambling, drugs and shisha lounges will be carried out after April 30 to protect young people. There is no alternative to safeguarding the youth, he said.
He said intelligence surveillance has been stepped up to prevent illegal shisha lounges from reopening under new names or addresses. Strict legal action against those involved is also continuing, he added.
Ahmed also reiterated the government’s “zero tolerance” policy toward gambling, online gambling and drugs as a measure to protect the country’s youth.
