Lalmonirhat: A 7-year-old girl was found dead in a maize field in the Falimari area of Aditmari upazila, Lalmonirhat, a day after she went missing, police said. Clashes broke out between angry residents and police over the incident, during which the vehicles of the deputy commissioner and the superintendent of police were vandalized. At least 30 people, including police, were injured. The officer-in-charge (OC) of Aditmari police station, Nazmul Haque, has been withdrawn.
The girl’s body was recovered on Tuesday (June 16) morning from a maize field next to her home in Falimari village, in Velabari union of the upazila, police said.
Citing residents, Lalmonirhat Superintendent of Police Md. Asaduzzaman said the girl’s family had suddenly been unable to find her since Monday afternoon. Despite an extensive search, she was not found. On Tuesday morning her family and residents again went out to look for her. At one point, they grew suspicious on seeing soft earth in a maize field beside her home. Residents then dug up the soft soil and recovered her body, which had been put in a sack.
On being informed, police went to the scene and recovered the body. When officers went to detain a man named in a complaint by the family, residents set fire to the man’s house, police said. When Lalmonirhat Superintendent of Police Md. Asaduzzaman and Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Rashedul Haque Prodhan arrived to control the situation, an angry crowd attacked their vehicles. Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) later brought the situation under control.
