A schoolgirl has drowned after going to bathe in a river in Madati union of Kaliganj upazila in Lalmonirhat.
The accident happened on Thursday (16 July) in the Koitari area of the upazila.
The girl who died was an eighth-grade student at a local school.
It was learned that after her half-yearly examinations she went with five friends to bathe in a stream beside her home. While bathing, she was suddenly swept into a deeper part by the current and went missing. When the other students with her screamed, locals rushed over and began rescue efforts.
On receiving the news, Fire Service members came to the scene and carried out a joint operation with locals. After about two hours, her body was recovered from the deep water.
Kaliganj police station officer-in-charge (investigation) Md Osman Goni said police visited the scene to look into the incident. As the family had no complaint, the body was handed over to them after the necessary legal formalities were completed, and she was later buried by the family.
