Egypt had led 2-0. Late in the match, Argentina scored three goals in a span of just 13 minutes 15 seconds, securing a place in the quarter-finals for the Albiceleste. But at the final whistle, Egyptian player Mostafa Zizo, in tears, accused the referee of bias.

France’s Francois Letexier was the main referee for the high-voltage Argentina-Egypt match. Accusing him after the match, Zizo said: “The referee did wrong, did wrong. The referee was not fair at all.”

He added: “He [the referee] is a tyrant. It is clear as daylight that he committed an injustice. He destroyed an entire nation’s hard work in an instant. He worked against us from the very start of the match.”

Egypt went into the break leading 1-0. Mohamed Salah’s side found the net again after the break, but the goal was disallowed by VAR for a foul.
