Amid a student protest movement, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal has sharply attacked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. On Tuesday he said the people of India could teach dictators a historic lesson.
Kejriwal said: “A little while ago the Modi government’s police issued a press release saying FIRs will be filed against everyone who took part in yesterday’s (Monday) protest.”
At a news conference, Kejriwal said: “Modiji, this country is not your father’s; it belongs to 1.4 billion people. Stop threatening, or the people of this country will teach you such a lesson that history will remember the miserable fate of a dictator.”
Before Kejriwal’s news conference, The Indian Express reported that Delhi Police had filed five FIRs against unidentified people and begun investigating whether there was any larger conspiracy behind disturbing the city’s peace. The FIRs allege rioting, damage to public and private property and attacks on on-duty government workers. Investigators are examining CCTV footage, including from cameras with facial-recognition technology, sources said.
Police said protesters caused extensive damage to public property, vandalizing 15 to 20 government vehicles and other government property, and that about 70 protesters had been detained on allegations of involvement.
On Monday, the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) held a protest march toward Parliament in Delhi, joined by several thousand young people and students, demanding an investigation into a leak of the medical-entrance exam (NEET) papers and the resignation of the education minister. Clashes broke out when police tried to stop them.
