Saudi Arabia’s weather authority has issued a warning of severe heatwaves and dust storms in the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, along with other regions of the country. The warning advises residents to avoid going outside unless necessary and to follow health guidelines.

The Saudi National Meteorological Center said temperatures in Mecca, Medina, Riyadh, the Eastern Province and some border areas could reach 47 to 49 degrees Celsius. Severe dust storms could also significantly reduce visibility in some areas.

The weather department said gusts of 40 to 60 kilometers per hour could accompany the dust storms, making travel risky in open areas, on highways and in desert regions.

Authorities have specifically urged the elderly, children, and those with chronic respiratory issues or heart disease to remain extra cautious. They advised drinking sufficient water, avoiding direct sunlight, and using masks and umbrellas when going outside.

According to experts, extreme heatwaves and dust storms have increased in the Middle East in recent years due to the effects of climate change. Following health guidelines during such weather is therefore the safest approach. Source: Cairo Science
