DHAKA — Authorities have ordered the recovery of state funds and legal action against teachers who have worked for years using forged certificates, education officials said.

Initial written responses have been sought from 487 teachers identified as holding forged credentials. They have been directed to explain through the appropriate authorities, within 10 working days, why action should not be taken against them. The responses must be submitted to the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, known as DSHE.

Separate letters on the matter were sent on Wednesday to all regional deputy directors of secondary and higher education and other officials concerned.

According to the letters, the education ministry’s internal audit branch for secondary and higher education forwarded a list of 471 teachers said to be holding forged or fake credentials. Of those, 402 are at the secondary level, 64 at the college level and five at the technical level. Under the ‘2025 Manpower Structure and MPO Policy for Non-Government Educational Institutions (Schools and Colleges),’ the inspection and audit directorate has directed the secondary and higher education department to take necessary action against the listed teachers and staff and report back.
