On Thursday, several countries including Venezuela were shaken by a devastating earthquake, with reports of many casualties emerging across news outlets. Bangladesh, too, could face such a disaster at any time.
For protection from any natural disaster and sudden death, Muslims are encouraged to recite the supplication taught by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him):
Allahumma inni a’udhu bika minal hadmi, wa a’udhu bika minat-taraddee, wa a’udhu bika minal gharaqi wal haraqi wal harami, wa a’udhu bika ay yatakhabbatanish-shaytanu ‘indal mawti, wa a’udhu bika an amuta fi sabilika mudbiran, wa a’udhu bika an amuta ladighan.
Translation: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from death by being crushed, from falling into an abyss, from drowning and from burning, and from extreme old age. I seek refuge in You from Satan’s influence at the time of death. I seek refuge in You from dying while fleeing from Your path, and I seek refuge in You from dying by the sting of a venomous creature.”
