A Chinese delegation will arrive within the next month or two to assess the prospects for industrialization in the country’s northern region, said Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, minister for local government, rural development (LGRD) and cooperatives.

He made the remarks Friday afternoon as chief guest at an event held at the Shaheed Mohammad Ali Stadium in Thakurgaon district town. China’s Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen was present at the event.

The LGRD minister said: “There is no alternative to industrialization for the country’s development and for boosting employment. The government is working to set up new factories in various regions. We want to build factories in the country. There are opportunities for industrialization in Thakurgaon and this region. To assess this potential, a Chinese delegation will come within the next month or two.”

He said: “The development of a nation is not possible through outside help alone; it requires building one’s own capacity, spreading education and hard work.”

Citing China’s development, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said: “Through its own efforts, skilled manpower and productive activity, that country has become one of the world’s leading economic powers today. We too must become self-reliant and move forward on the strength of our own capacity. Only then will Bangladesh advance more firmly on the path of development and prosperity.”

Touching on children’s education and human-resource development, he said Prime Minister Tareque Rahman has taken various initiatives to raise the new generation as more educated, skilled and capable citizens. He called on everyone to work together to bring up future generations with quality education and moral values.

At the event, China’s Ambassador Yao Wen said the two countries would continue to work together to further strengthen cooperative relations between Bangladesh and China.

He gave an assurance that a Chinese delegation would arrive here in July or August this year and would visit potential areas of cooperation and investment.

At the end of the event, the guests distributed educational materials among 6,308 students from 36 educational institutions in Thakurgaon municipality. Others who spoke on the occasion included Thakurgaon Deputy Commissioner Rafiqul Haque, Superintendent of Police Belal Hossain, district BNP president Mirza Faisal Amin and general secretary Paygam Ali.
