Argentina’s dream ended in a World Cup final defeat to Spain. With their favourite team’s 1-0 loss, the much-discussed “wedding plan” of actress Porimoni is also off, for now.
Reacting to Argentina’s defeat after the final, Porimoni joked: “No wedding after all, that’s that. Beloved Argentina, see you again.” The comment drew a big response, with more than 52,000 reactions on her Facebook post; with comments turned off, the post was widely shared instead.
“The final changed all the calculations even before the wedding,” Porimoni said. “I feel very sad for Argentina, because emotion and love are both tied to this team. But I believe defeat is not the end, it is also a new beginning. Beloved Argentina, we will wait for you until the next World Cup. You will surely come back even stronger. And Messi is an affection — from the heart, love for him.”
Porimoni had backed Argentina vocally throughout the World Cup, celebrating every win on social media, sometimes making videos in the sky-blue-and-white jersey and sometimes expressing her admiration for Lionel Messi. Her Facebook post announcing a wedding drew attention late on Wednesday night; before the Argentina-England semi-final she had written: “If Argentina win the cup, I’ll marry again. Final.” The playful post went viral instantly, with hundreds of thousands of reactions and thousands of shares.
Before the final, Porimoni admitted she had felt a little awkward about the post. Laughing on Sunday afternoon, she said: “I had never announced a marriage before. I fell in love and then suddenly married. This time I got into trouble by announcing it. I didn’t think everyone would take it so seriously. So many serious marriage proposals are coming in, I don’t know what to do.” She also raised another obstacle: “A wedding needs a guardian. I used to have a guardian, but now there is no one of that standing. I’m thinking, let my son grow up, let him marry, and then — or before that, if my son gives me away as guardian — I can marry.” In the end, just as Argentina’s dream of the trophy went unfulfilled, Porimoni’s much-discussed wedding announcement is not coming true for now.
