At least two people died of asphyxiation in a crowd crush in Mexico City after Mexico beat Ecuador 2-0 to advance to the World Cup round of 16 for the first time in 40 years, AFP and Reuters reported.

Thousands of fans gathered at Hamburgo and Lancaster streets near the Angel of Independence monument after the match. The celebration turned tragic when fireworks set off panic in the packed crowd, local media reported. People rushed to escape on the narrow streets, leading to a stampede in which several were trampled or suffocated.

Mexico City’s health department said a 44-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman were taken to hospital in critical condition and could not be saved. Their deaths were confirmed as caused by asphyxiation.

The New York Times, citing Mexico City’s Public Health Secretariat, reported the toll may be higher at three, saying a 44-year-old man and two women aged 19 and 48 were found unconscious in the Colonia Juarez area.

Mexico City government head Clara Brugada Molina expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims and said the administration would support the affected families through this difficult time.
