Speaker of the National Parliament Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram has said he received no government benefits of any kind while serving as an opposition member over a 40-year parliamentary career.
He made the remarks on Monday (29 June), on the 18th working day of the budget session of the 13th National Parliament.
“I too spent 40 years in this parliament. I was an opposition member as well. I never got a single penny. I was arrested and jailed five times. That is all. There were no other gains,” the Speaker said.
Praising the opposition leader’s budget speech, he said the leader had spent nearly an hour addressing various national problems and aspects of the budget.
Hafiz Uddin Ahmed said that because he occupied the chair, he could not raise the problems of his birthplace and constituency, Bhola. The opposition leader had presented them before the nation, he said, expressing hope that the finance minister and prime minister would take the issues into consideration.
