The government has taken an initiative to ensure ambulance service to bring primary and overall healthcare to people’s doorsteps, and has planned to build electric ambulances with local technology. A meeting on the matter was held at the Prime Minister’s Office on Saturday (6 June), chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. Deputy press secretary Hasan Shiplu said the initiative was taken to ensure fast, modern ambulance service, with the project to start with one upazila as a model.

He said the plan covered improving ambulance service across three tiers — village to upazila, upazila to district, and district to capital. The government’s aim is to reduce import dependence and build a low-cost, modern medical-transport system through domestic ambulance production. Experts at the meeting said the locally made ambulances would have necessary medical equipment, oxygen support and emergency-service facilities, designed for the country’s geography and road conditions. The health and family welfare minister, the state minister, the health-services secretary and other officials and experts attended.
