Police have recovered two cattle from the basement of the home of Jubo Dal activist Shariful Islam Prodhan in Komorpur village of Pabna Sadar upazila. He faces an allegation of keeping stolen cattle there. During the raid, police recovered the two cattle and detained the accused, Shariful Islam. The allegations against him are untested.
The raid on the activist’s home in the Komorpur border-market area took place around 9pm on Friday (7 August), said Pabna Sadar police station officer-in-charge (OC) Tariqul Islam.
The detained Shariful Islam Prodhan is the son of the late Ismail Pramanik of the same area. He is linked to Jubo Dal politics, according to local sources.
Police and locals said cattle belonging to a resident of Sadar upazila were stolen at midnight last Thursday (6 August). After the matter was reported verbally to Sadar police, they began investigating. In the meantime, police received a tip-off that stolen cattle had been brought into the area. A subsequent raid recovered the two cattle from the basement of the activist Shariful’s home.
District Jubo Dal convener Ilias Ahmed Himel Rana said: “We want the offender tried, whoever he may be. A party does not create criminals. Criminals blend into a party. In that case the responsibility does not fall on the party or organisation.”
On banners using the Jubo Dal name and his photograph, the Jubo Dal leader said: “They take photos with leaders in various ways. Later they use those in various ways to commit crimes. Not everyone can be identified. Once their true identity is known, no one is sheltering them.”
Pabna Sadar OC Tariqul Islam said: “The cattle thief Shariful has been detained and brought to the station. It is not known whether he has any party identity. In initial questioning, the names of several people involved in this ring were obtained from the detained Shariful. Efforts are under way to verify and arrest them.”
He said: “We have found the owner of one of the two cattle. A case will be filed by him, and legal steps will follow.”
