A woman who escaped from custody at Madaripur Sadar Model Police Station by breaking the grille of the room where she was held has been re-arrested within 24 hours, police said. She was detained early Saturday from a house in Keraniganj, on the outskirts of Dhaka.

According to police, the woman had been detained on Thursday night on suspicion of involvement in immoral activities and later handed over to the Sadar Model Police Station. Because the station’s main building is under construction, its work is running temporarily from the ground floor of the officer-in-charge’s residence, and with no lockup available she was kept in police custody in a veranda room. Around 1:30 a.m., she broke the room’s grille and fled.

Over the escape from custody, the duty officer and a constable were withdrawn and attached to the police lines. A three-member inquiry committee, headed by an additional superintendent of police, Fariha Rafiq Bhabna, was formed on Friday and asked to submit a full report within three working days.

Madaripur Superintendent of Police Habibur Rahman said the woman had been re-arrested within 24 hours with the help of information technology. “A case will be filed against her,” he said. “A three-member committee has been formed over the escape, and if there was any negligence of duty, departmental action will be taken. The duty officer and a sentry have already been withdrawn and attached to the police lines.”
