The death toll from heavy rain and floods in Thailand has risen to 23, the authorities said on Tuesday (September 29).
The capital, Bangkok, is the worst-hit area. Floodwater has begun to recede there, but the city’s main airport remains chaotic.
The government has approved an aid package worth several million dollars. Bangkok received about 320 millimetres of rain in just three days last week.
City governor Chadchart Sittipunt said he expects floodwater to clear from Bangkok’s main roads within two days, though it could take up to a week to drain from other flooded areas. “Recovery work is under way in areas where the water has receded,” he said.
According to the interior ministry, at least 23 people have died across the country since September 16, four of them in Bangkok.
