The wife of the additional superintendent of police (sadar circle) for Joypurhat district, Arif Hossain, has held a press conference raising serious allegations against him. She alleged that the police officer used his own car to collect drugs from Hili and supply them to various places in Joypurhat. She also alleged that he demanded dowry, took drugs and had improper relationships with several women.

Describing herself as a victim, she said at the press conference that she was physically and mentally abused and turned out of the house along with her young child because she objected to an extramarital relationship and did not pay the dowry demanded.

She held the press conference at the auditorium of the Bangladesh Crime Reporters’ Association (CRAB) in the capital on Sunday morning.

She said at the press conference that her husband carried drugs in his own car from Hili in Dinajpur and supplied them to Joypurhat and various other places. He used his own car for drug trafficking, she said, so that no subordinate police officer in his area of responsibility would grow suspicious.

She alleged that the police officer also takes drugs himself.

She alleged that her husband is involved in an extramarital affair. Since their marriage in 2019, she said, he became involved in drug taking and improper relationships with several women. When she protested, she said, she was subjected to abuse.

She said 40 lakh taka had been given earlier as dowry to keep the marriage together. Another 50 lakh taka was demanded recently. When she refused to pay it, she said, she was beaten and turned out of the house in Joypurhat at the start of this year along with her five-and-a-half-year-old daughter.

She said that on 30 May she was beaten again after she protested on seeing her husband in a compromising situation with a woman at Bosila in Mohammadpur, Dhaka. Seeking redress, she lodged a complaint at police headquarters and on 5 July filed a case under the Dowry Prohibition Act at the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka.

She alleged at the press conference that, angered by the case, the police officer used his influence on 9 July to file a counter-case of theft against her and her parents at Joypurhat sadar police station, which falls within his jurisdiction.

She demanded that the accused officer be withdrawn from Joypurhat and given exemplary punishment following a neutral investigation.

Additional Superintendent of Police Md Arif Hossain could not be reached for comment on the allegations despite repeated calls to his official number.
