Prime Minister Tareque Rahman said the government has taken steps to increase LNG imports and supply to address the country’s growing energy crisis, adding that the energy situation would improve further within two years. He laid out the plan Wednesday in remarks to the Jatiya Sangsad on the country’s energy situation.
In his address to parliament, the prime minister said talks are underway with an interested company to build a floating LNG terminal in the Kutubdia area, in the deep sea off Moheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar. He said he hopes the proposed terminal will be able to begin supplying LNG by December 2028.
If the initiative is realized, he said, LNG imports would rise significantly within the next two years, further improving the overall energy supply situation.
Meanwhile, the prime minister said special priority is being given to meeting energy demand in the country’s southwestern region, with work underway on a proposal to build two more floating LNG terminals, on an urgent basis, near the Payra and Mongla port areas.
Noting that these terminals are being planned to meet energy demand in the southwestern region, the prime minister expressed hope that, once realized, the proposed floating LNG terminals would both improve the country’s overall energy supply situation and significantly ease the gas shortage.
